Why is Elizabeth's visit to the Collins' house important to the story?

In Pride and Prejudice why is Elizabeth's visit to the Collins' house at Hunsford important to the story. This is where Elizabeth meets Fitzwilliam, Lady Catherine de Bourge, finds out the truth about Wickham and where Darcy proposes to Elizabeth. This is in Volume 2 Chapters 6-10
